Can't believe I'm still reading about this.  If you have a typical Toronto city house, and your brand new Lexus is jammed up to your front door, then take precautions.

A very simple electronic box can relay the continuous signal from your fob hanging right near the door.  I don't know the maximum distance.  Then they can get in and fool the car into starting.

Get a small foil-insulated lunch bag, like this.

Something like 12 bucks on ammie.  The Faraday Cage bags are exactly the same thing, but more expensive.  Just throw your keys in and flop down the lid.  It will cut the range tremendously, enough to make them move to your silly neighbour's car.  As with all thefts, you just have to put in enough security so they pass you by, like the bear story.
