No condo cracking expected in Panama City

Regional PGV Numbers Breakdown
Location / ZonePeak Ground Velocity (PGV) RangeModified Mercalli IntensityImpact Description
Epicenter Zone (Herrera / Los Santos)50.0 to 122.42 cm/sLevel VII to VIII (Very Strong / Severe)Over 400 structures damaged or collapsed. Fault lines shifted ground rapidly up to 8.3 meters.
Mid-Distance Zone (Penonomé / Coclé)10.0 to 20.0 cm/sLevel V to VI (Moderate / Strong)Partial collapse of historical cathedral spires and structural cracking in hotels.
Panama City (The Capital)2.0 to 5.0 cm/sLevel IV to V (Light / Moderate)Violent swaying of skyscrapers for over 40 seconds. Triggered widespread panic but stayed beneath the velocity threshold for structural failure.

You need 40 cm/s for condo cracking.  Over 100 cm/s is massive damage.  This will be a forgotten earthquake.

ps I am also announcing that The Earthquakes have officially stepped out of their batting drought.  Might get me another coffee.

ps also you can mark this as a 'Busted Rock' earthquake because the attenuation (drop off of pgv) was very high.  'Hard Rock earthquakes' have much less die-off.
