The anomaly map is a simple calculation of subtracting a 'climate base' from the sea surface temperature map. It is meant to highlight rapid change. But something went horribly wrong.
Nothing much is going on with actual temperatures. The anomaly started from the 'end' which is down South America. In a real El Nino the heat energy comes from the West. This weird behaviour could only be a result of slightly warmer water coming up the coast of S Am. It's still cold water.
Now, the process is reversed with colder water coming up. The phoney anomaly is being erased from the bottom. We shall soon see that tail being chopped off. Neat.
