In the old days, anything that could not fall under the Scientific Method was considered 'magic'. It could not be detected, reproduced, or have a mechanism found. This is the state for all our weather situations.
When it was cold in the 70's, there was a lot of clear-air convection and turbulence. Then we had our warming cycle, and the turbulence went away, along with the ozone hole. Now, everything is back.
The 70's were a golden age of atmospheric physics measurements. Then it all went away. Now, we will continue to run into this, and it will all explained away. Keep your seat belt on.
