This was the best of science, and the worst.
If you want to cry for them, read this article. This is a result of the trumpy forest fire. It throws out the baby with the bathwater, and the bathtub. I've complained about these big guys for a long time, they are always wrong, and they were a monopoly. I obviously have mixed feelings.
The good stuff was the raw geophysics, where they didn't put their political stamp on it. They have been intellectually bankrupt for a long time now, simply because they had to appeal directly to politicians for funding, and it was mostly pork.
Soon, the automatic geophysics will be gone as the machines conk out. Everybody will just be forced to predict long-term weather by looking out the door, just like they are doing now. I will make fun of all the people saying 'Jeez, it's getting cold'. And even more fun at the people who say 'Just because it is colder than ever, doesn't make our warmie fantasy wrong.'
And don't get me started on earthquakes. The usgus was always wrong, but I liked their seismometers. Along with the noaa Argo floats, this will all be gone.
ps yeah, Alberta is changing their slogan.
