Big earthquake and the USGS hangs out the 'Closed' sign

 


This is in the upper volcano zone of the subduction zone.  However, this zone gets compression, shallow thrust earthquakes, which come with a very high peak ground velocity (pgv).  We won't know the actual value, but I'll look around.  Not a lot of instruments here.

This type of earthquake is usually 'one and done', so it's not a foreshock for something bigger.  Lots of aftershocks.
