Today marks another russian zero-day for Windows. You have to be an idiot to run that stuff, but everybody does. Most people are happy with 'Security by Obscurity" which means that they haven't got to you yet. When you want security for your house in the neighbourhood, you just have better locks than the neighbours, and a crappier car. You don't have a big sign -- "Nothing is locked, I have insurance!"
My Linux is secure, because I can barely get it working at the best of times. For example, I had a nice security camera system working with Frigate. It is the most wonderful thing. Until the new version had a big bug in it, that they won't fix for years. The fix is to go back a version.
I didn't know that at the beginning, because who would admit to that? No, I spent weeks trying to fix that it couldn't connect to the camera. To look at the camera, you need ONVIF, but that library has had a bug forever. Doesn't work.
Then I factory reset the camera, which is a bitch because all the installation is geared towards Windows. Finally went through acres of manuals to find the right one for the camera API's. I finally have an rtsp url that works.
Haven't got it all working yet, but I certainly learn a lot, which I will forget tomorrow. That's why I write these things.
For clueless people, who don't want to wait for the ruskies to empty their bank accounts, I recommend chromebooks. The banks have covered all these russian losses, but now are getting ridiculous. My wife had a problem in the states, paying for the dang luggage fee by the sleazy airlines. The bank of MO sent her a text to confirm the purchase, but she didn't bother with roaming (as if that works in the states). Then they shut down her card, and when she phoned, they basically said, - go to heck, we don't want you as a trouble-making customer. So, the wonders of a cashless society, with the russians breathing down our backs.
Ha, ha, your bank doesn't want to cover this any more.
