Cutting Out the Toe of a Slope

Article

Wow! Here's one that exceeds the Indonesian Mud Volcano in stupidity! So, here we have these unstable slopes, and somebody is digging a gravel pit at the toe. La, la, la! They have tension cracks and local failures. La, la, la. The state makes a feeble effort to stop them. They go to their lawyers. La la la, and then KAPOW!

T'were'nt us that caused this! Must have been a distant earthquake. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Act of Dog, he determined the river needed to be filled.

Had a similar instance here where a slope was logged that shouldn't have been. Fifteen years later the survivors below it found out how forests stabilize mountain slopes in the Pacific Northwest and what happens when the tree roots finally rot away.

A highway and a quarry. Is there a retention wall known to man that could have held that back?

I just like how it apes the mud volcano sequence so perfectly.
