My machine finally hung so that I could not restart it in any way. Luckily I still had my install usb, so I reinstalled. I am now on 4.17.0 rc6, and I hope for the best. :)
Blah, it did hang up on a heavy graphics load....
ps. rc6 seems stable. no framebuffer still.
rc6 not that stable.
