Sea level goes back up

This is sad for me.  I was expecting a 1940's-type drop, the one that froze out the nastie invasion of russiak.

This is the closest to absolute sea level that I can find.  It is dependent just on the average temperature of the oceans.  All those other places they call 'sea level' is just local gauge level.

This burst upward could still be a residual of the deceased warming event.

ps most likely it is still just jittering with straight ups and downs.

Stationary storm churns away, but not much rain

Not much going on.  That storm is trapped, but it has dried out.  A new cold blob is sneaking down the side of the mountains.

ps you can see the #2 hurricane starting up.  It has to go down another path, then all the heat energy of the Gulf will be used up.  No heat energy for the Atlantic.

Everyday physics - polymers - Part 2

For polymers, we have spaghetti or risotto.

For most of our old lives, we have been living with very short monomers.  Now, we are into the long stuff for paints and glues.

The adhesion to a surface depends on the active end points, and the long polymers don't have many, but it is 10 times stronger.

After many failures, I have settled on a new method.  When the old paint is peeled off, I have bare wood.  In many places on the cottage deck, I have replaced boards with fresh cedar.  Nothing sticks to that.  So, I buy my Behr Deckover and mix a watered solution.  Then I pour a hunk of Weldbond, which is long-polymer glue.

I put on several coats of this mixture.  It sucks right into the wood.  All the strings are buried in the wood, with end points sticking out.  Then I finally put on a medium mix (with a dash of glue), and I have no adhesion problems.  I always mix this stuff with water a bit, because it is as thick as tar.  You can see the fuzzy ends of the polymers when you pour the paint.

I'm using this paint for all the stain now, since it is much cheaper.  Just mix to your taste.  The regular stain has short fibers (monomers), and lasts a long time on vertical surfaces.

End.

Toronto keeps away the storm, Europe enjoys brisk weather

There is nothing worse than a stationary storm.  Good thing our cold blob is keeping it away.

This is a taste of the winter for Europe.

Of course, we have the usual uncertainties.

Headshots are now worthless

Another business bites the dust.  As said in the article, it was something like a thousand bucks to get a pro headshot, good for the power-people.  Now, it's a few bucks.

Spicy Surprise

We got some yellow pepper plants from the neighbour.  But in this bunch which was supposed to be mild, there was a plant of something like Ghost Peppers.  We first realized it at the cottage, when the daughter-in-law started screaming.  Then, I did a man thing, and tasted a bit.  OMG!

We couldn't tell any difference by look alone, and none of us wanted to munch on peppers to locate the little hellion.  Today, we finally cornered Mr. Spicy (son in law) to do the check.  As he was munching, he kept saying 'Not spicy', until he finally tried one that was a bit more yellow.  "Oh, that's spicy." he says in a calm tone, and continues to munch them.  My daughter put her tongue on one, and screamed.  A glass of water didn't do anything.  It was hilarious.

We let them take all the peppers.  Now we know, and the soninlaw started breaking out in a big sweat, and looked funny.  He finally admitted they were a bit over the top.

Space station not all it's cracked up to be

I just had to throw this in.  Poots will blame the cracks on the US.

Hurricane storm trying to sneak past the Toronto defence

Oh that Toronto defence, not the strongest.

It was a nice, heroic cold blob that is thinking of squooshing to the east.  Coward!

We are getting the outer rings.

An epic battle, we shall see what we shall see.

Good news - glacier stops melting

 Reference

This is a good article.  You can see the constraints they are working under, in that 'melting mystery' stands in for 'not melting'.

For me, the important thing is that the temps have dropped since 2016, which is my main theme.  However, they must go with the old canard that ocean currents are driven by wind, when they are the dominant force (and energy).

This area will announce the clarion call of a major ice cycle (Little Ice Age), when it becomes totally encased in ice (or not).  Then, Europe will be happy that the ice is growing.

Linux - Chrome scrolling problem finally fixed

This has been bugging me for over a year.  I switched to Debian Trixie (testing), and it has finally stopped.  I can stop blaming my mouse.

ps there is also an intermittent problem with Nest wifi.  It randomly disconnects for a short time.  No fix in sight.

ps. had to reset my old google home speaker.  Many years without that.

The joy of being always wrong

I'm always wrong and that's why I only have 3 readers.  To have 'gravitas' in this world, you have to say nothing, so you are never wrong.  It's good to have been right once, 20 years ago.

As a loser, I have total freedom to explore things, without worrying about my reputation.

I've been wrong since 2016.  That was a huge El Nino that reversed currents over the whole Pacific.  It destroyed both the North Pacific Current, and the Gulf Stream.  These are the two main ways of transferring heat energy to the north.

Since then, we have been relying on tropical plumes, and they have done a good job.  What knocked me over was the continuing 'resonance decay' of partial El Ninos, as defined by ocean currents.  Every one of those peaks since 2016 can be associated with reversals that are getting smaller and smaller.

These last one broke all the rules.  It was around Indonesia, and then drifted and parked in the S Hemi, away from the sweeping ocean currents.  Never done that before.  Thus, it had a huge effect on the world temperatures, and not much in the north.  We got one mild winter out of it.

Nothing like 2016 on the continental weather.  We got summer starting in May!

Now, we will have summer mid-July to mid-August.  However, I was totally wrong about September, when we got a very rare stagnant bubble over us, with wind coming from the east.

UK surrounding ocean temperatures going down to Arctic levels

 This is interesting.

The Gulf Stream has dipped down to Spain, and there is no joy in Mudville (UK).  Look at the unbelievable cold water for the Pacific and Atlantic belts.

The anomaly map doesn't show much because of the weird baseline map which shall remain unknown forever.  However, it totally smashes any revival of laninny.

Lucky for us, they are really pumping up the Jet Stream.

I call this "Jet Stream Extreme" and it will be the official reason that Europe freezes to death.  Always good to know these things when you burn the furniture to keep warm.  In reality, the jet stream is just a reaction to hot and cold air masses, but a good fantasy is always good money.

ps. in order to boost the Socratic Argument, they are going on about how the jse has caused severe weather for millennia, all on its own.  However, this time it is clange.  That's exactly the same argument as -- 'We've had temperature cycles since the beginning of time, but this time it is humans.'  You cannot argue against this.  Works for the business cycle, as well.

Hurricane goes splat against a cold blob

Like running into a patio glass door at a party.  I was so good at that.

Europe has a major Arctic spill.  This is the action I expect for the 'Winter of No Gas'.

ps

I'lll bee baaack!

ps. for those interested, in Toronto, prices for induction cooktops have fallen 50%.  I predicted this, a combination of the housing price collapse, and post-covid production.

The Toronto Big Dig

This is a wonderful project that could be successful, but there is always something...

All these projects end up as disasters.  In the old company, I was happy building something twice as expensive and twice as long.  However, now, things are always many times more expensive and they don't work.

This is 'influengineering' at its best.  Everybody wants a piece of it, and there are no laws of physics to keep things in line.  At the end, the pieces don't fit.  We were involved in the design of the Presto card, and it was a simple thing to have card readers.  However, powerful interests demanded that the card reader could communicate even in the darkest tunnels or standard underpasses.  That demand destroyed the project.

With this tunnel, all the problems will be with the in and out spirals (or ramps).  It is hard to conceive of it, but the demands will be to put exit ramps at every little place, just like a subway has too many connections.  It is easy to just put a tunnel under a mountain.

ps it has already started out poorly with the political demand of 'no tolls'.  Something like this demands a congestion charge.  You either ration a scarce resource by market forces, or you get long Soviet lines for toilet paper.

ps. you would make a hidden toll, like fewer exits.

ps and in other news, the new trumpy watch shows "Countdown to Victory" with a display showing 1...2...3....

ps. we should really put our billions into cooling coils for the Arctic.  Year-round skating!

I suppose they find their own charts...

Hurricane Hazel La Second

Ok, enough about making fun of stupidity.  That is dangerous.  I'm back to dry old weather reports.

This guy is following the HH path, but we've had a lot of those.  Besides, HH was just 8 inches, and we've had 3 storms like that this summer.  All the cold blobs have gone elsewhere, so there is nothing to stop it.

It's funny that I said the Atlantic belt is so cold that there will be no hurricanes, but this one is sucking off the Gulf of Mexico heat energy.  That is totally isolated, and has no part in the world temperature cycles.

There is really not much out there, and Gulf Hurricanes drain the place of heat energy with about 2 hurricanes.

We are being lashed by Pacific air coming over the mountains, and this has a chance to deflect the hurricane.

ps a beautiful video of the winds around the hurricane.  You see the hot and cold feeds, and the pressure from the Pacific.  We most likely won't get it in Toronto.

Fish in Rehab

Wow, was I going on about everything!  This was caused by forgetting my anti-depressant pills for the cottage.  When I got back, my brain zoomed.  Turns out that these pills don't do anything for brain serotonin, like I thought.  They just tried a million compounds and these worked on depression.  They just assumed the mechanism, and somebody actually applied the Scientific Method.

The pills actually reactivate cross-connections in the brain, and put you back to when you were young.  The 'bright brain' has these connections, so that you see things that nobody else does.  I've called this the 'bright gene' and it helped Western Civilization take over the world.

Your brain ends up burning the candle at both ends, and then it runs out at 40.  These pills have an amazing effect on some people.  Others, self medicate, with booze and other stuff.  Anyway, since nobody reads anymore, I feel I am done for a while.

As usual, when I leave the world, I am following a few things.

Gulf Stream - totally gone from feeding the water north of UK.  The marker islands will be totally encased in ice this year.

Pacific belt - very cold with tremendous ocean current energy.  When everything goes cold, they will make up a laninny and not show any charts.

Atlantic belt - also cold.  Very few hurricanes.

Very cold this year (like I said about last year) but no miracle heating event to keep things warm.  Expect natgas to empty the storage in the US and Europe (like I've said for years).  I have to be right one day.

Toronto housing market -- Ten times worse than expected, once they finally run out of props, just like the Japan bust.

I make the predictions on forces, which means that they can be deflected for a while, but they grind on.

Banging your head against the wall not healthy

I feel like doing it all the time, with the stupidity in the world.  However, I don't.

Black rain heads to Europe

In the Atlantic,  blob of black rain heads to Europe.  Maybe not.  That is extreme rain on the top of the scale.

It is caused by this 'Godzilla of Cold, vs. Mothra of Heat' battle.  The black rain is contained to this tiny stringer of oceanic plume penetrating the cold.

The wind patterns show it to be much bigger than the mimic implies.  I am impressed.  This sort of thing is all over Europe right now, and is easily explained by influencer science, after the fact.  These explanations are so good that influscience will go on forever, even when we are freezing.  But can they predict anything?  They don't have to.  Do they improve our lives - Nope, don't have to.

ps. Influscience - defined as Socratic debate, where powerful individuals take a position which benefits them, and debate it. to the point of brow-beating.  It is the exact opposite of the Scientific Method.

ps.  we now have Influengineering, which is engineering without physics.  I can't wait to see what it produces.

ps. Influengineering has resulted in huge engineering failures that are covered up with legal debate, so that they really aren't failures at all.  In the 70's there was a huge shift in civil engineering from 'stiffness design' to 'strength design'.  We are suffering from it now.  I've had a rant going in Google Maps about the new Costco in our area, which built a cheap concrete design with huge elevators for the carts.  These elevators don't work, and I go on and on about it.  It was the same with our 70's design Hydro building in downtown Toronto.  The building danced like a ballerina, and the elevators were haunted by demons.

Everyday physics - polymers - Part 1

The science of polymers is claimed by chemists, but I'm going to yank that control away and bring it to physics.  They can cry if they want to.

A polymer starts as a monomer, which can be a very long molecule.  You create a monomer in a vat with chemistry.  The main property is very active end points and not much chemical activity along the sides.  For physics, we think of the activity as charges, so that we have high charges (forces) at the ends, and none along the sides.

So, it is basically a single strand of spaghetti, and you can mix (create) it as a batch of cooked spag in water.  In the water, it is a slinky, slimy mess.

We now deal with polymers all the time, and they have replaced many other things.  I have particular fun with polymer paint for the cottage.  The stains and paints used to be pigments in oil solvents, now they are all polymers in water.  This has caused a lot of problems

If the spag dries on that plate, it becomes a solid hunk.  The strength of the hunk is dependent on the 'cross-links' and strength of the strands.  The cross-links glue strand to strand where they cross.  A good paint polymer is easy to spread when wet, and the cross-links develop as it cures, or dries.  I also use a lot of epoxy, which doesn't use water.

The important physics for the cottage is the adhesion of the paint to the surface.  You can have a very strong polymer with long chains, and glue that only sticks strand to strand.  I've painted a polymer on the deck of the cottage, and next year it comes off in sheets, which are very strong.  Not useful.

So, I've had to play a game of long and short polymers.

-to be continued

Swifties grow up to sororities

In they come, out they go.

Life is wonderful.

ps. they are not mixing up sorority girls with strippers.

Life is amazing without physics

Yeah, the premier journal of 'influencer science' puts this out.  Can you see a problem?  No?  Looks good then.  As the world gets colder, I guarantee you that this method will thicken the ice.  Of course, the ice would increase anyway.  But who looks at that?  Sink all your money into this.

ps the wonderful thing about having no laws of physics is that it is a total trumpian anarchy.  It drifts farther and farther away, getting sillier and sillier.  For a country, it ends with everybody dead.  But for influencer science, the end is an unknown.

Cold blob fails, just a big muck

And we are getting moist air over the mountains.  All is a big muck.

ps. the cold blob just moved over to the east.  Look at it showing the warm air who's boss.

ps. this is the main physics for our upcoming ice cycle.  With no heat energy, the plumes can't penetrate the cold.  And cold is the absence of heat energy.  In the old days of the warm cycle, the plumes would go right over the Arctic.

Ocean currents with beautiful braiding

Very turbulent with a nice braiding.

It will be very difficult to get a laninny out of this without mentioning ocean currents.

Huge cold blob drives us out of the cottage

Our nice stagnant weather has ended.

Europe is going to get a blob, as well.

Cottage report

Still in a pocket of still air. So hot and dry.

Water is getting low.

No strong wind for a long time. No drought because of all the previous rain.

Ps  Sat morning is cold. Time to think of firewood.

Ps Huge cold blob coming in. Some rain already allowed us to burn.

Another cold blob slices into Europe

All summer, powerful cold blobs have caused huge rain storms.  This is the opposite of the mechanism of clange, if anybody would mention such a thing.

I'm glad I never say anything against clange, because it encompasses everything.

Your phone is a bomb -- not

Can't wait to find the total scoop on this.  I've repaired phones and there is no space for anything.  How much high-explosives would be needed?  A standard marble-sized blob?  Maybe the case is a plastic explosive.  I just can't figure is out on how they got the needed space.  Perhaps replace an old component with a smaller new one?  Put in a better battery and get space.

Finally, tropics and worlds are hooking off

In physics-land there was nothing seen to be pushing these temps up.  They are 6 days behind, as an embarrassed media found out.  I couldn't find any unusual thermal activity that defined last year's huge excursion.  Now that the spikes are turning, we can assumed that these spikes were caused by cyclonic activity.  This is usual in the fall, when the temperatures are turning over.

These will now turn down, and we will enjoy brisk breezes.

Do not wear a naked dress to a job interview

No gum chewing, or man-spreading, especially if you are a woman.  I didn't find any mention of men with pants hanging down to their knees.  Excellent entertainment for the morning.

Unusual Atlantic air flow creates paradise

This has never happened.  If we are lucky, we get really nice weather from a Pacific air flow over the mountains.  This will give us a dry summer.  Right now, we are in paradise with a continuous Atlantic air flow.  Nice, moderated ocean air.  The most we ever get from the Atlantic are storms.

I finally had to come home from the cottage, to do the laundry.  I was swimming for goodness sake.  I don't go in the water that much, and never in September.  We have had Sept heatwaves, but that has always come from the Gulf, with high humidity.  What we have now is amazing air, and at the cottage, the air was always totally static, not a puff.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

ps I just love this.

The ozone holes are getting bigger and bigger.  This is really due to it getting colder.  However, my favourite influencers are just spinning out stories that it is due to leftover chemicals.  Those fantasy chemical are not measurable, and if they were really active on the ozone, they would have been used up by now.  This is a work of art.

ps.  yeah, we can keep this story going until 2066.  No mechanisms need apply.

I am totally amazed.

Weather pattern changes

The past six months have seen a pattern of intense cold blobs coming down on us and colliding into warm stagnant air. This has given us huge floods. Europe is seeing this now.

We are now into a classic chaos turnover. Who knows what will happen.

Ps

Nooaa world plot is in. Only August's plot goes with the flow. The all-months plot shows the drop. Pick your poison.

Ps

Neat.

Ps so nice at the cottage
