The physics of the military

I used to be big into military hardware.  That's one area that is brutally honest, as long as you have battles.  It's like building nuclear plants, you can't be phillies and actually do anything.

The major oscillation is the battle between offense and defence.  The castle was a great invention that lasted for centuries, until the giant cannon came along.

In WWi, the invention of artillery, high explosives, machine guns, barbed wire, made for a perfect defence.  Everybody was bogged down in trench warfare.  Tanks came along to bust that.

In WWII, tanks were perfect offence.  The planes were really a stalemate.  Then we had the nuclear bomb which took all the fun out of everything.

Tank warfare was still great for minor conflicts.  Israel has shown that.  The war between offence and defence was between missiles and tank armor.  Fighter jets have held on for a while, but now it will be all drones.
