Physics - It is generally impossible to put a spherical surface on a flat chart. The wrinkles are terrible! That is why there are many projections, which are feeble attempts. For example, on most projections Greenland becomes so big as to attract Trump's attention, but it is really small on a standard desk globe.
On the equator, Africa looks small. Who cares?
