Zoom physics 5 - Scaling Laws (solids)

Scaling laws are lots of fun when you use models for dams and such.  Now it's all digital.  Scaling is  one of my main problems with shake tables and earthquake engineering.  But I think all the young people in California are following me now.  :)

Just like the oil industry is following me for earthquakes in Oklahoma.   blah....

  1. I'll be catching up shortly on the physics
but first what do you think of this news

    https://www.sciencealert.com/the-earth-is-moving-substantially-less-because-of-the-global-pandemic

"According to seismologists, that drastic reduction in human hustle and bustle is causing the Earth to move substantially less. The planet is 'standing still'."

  2. They are just talking about urban noise. In Toronto we have a seismometer that swamped by day, and is only good at night. It's probably a lot better now.

  3. Hi Harold

okay, I did get/understand this scaling stuff a bit better
the zoom 4 I had to look up all the terms
    heat of phase change
    heat of fusion
I hadn't a clue what these things meant?!
If you would like to explain either of these 'things' better, that would be great
Hubby tried to explain this as related to airconditioning (part of his job sheet metal involves air conditioning installation so he get's that!)

anyway...so far so good, if a bit confusing

english majors don't make good climate scientists, but, what can we do?

  4. I am at a loss to explain it better. I barely understand it myself. :)

  5. hubby was saying if you built a house out of balsa wood, as you might a miniature house- the real size house would not stand up. (weight, wind etc.,)

I think you understand it a bit better then you are letting on.

  7. Wait until we do fluid scaling laws ... that's awesome!
