Roller compacted concrete for dams

This is just a cute little article on something I knew nothing about. Instead of pouring concrete, they make it up as stiff as asphalt, and they smash it down. It looks quite ugly, but it's strong.

  1. They make highways like that here in Oz: dump a load of stiff cement straight on the ground, then drive a big thing bristling with shutters over the top of it.

They're truly horribly roads: noisy, bumpy, lethal in the rain, and to fix them they have to slice a big section out and fill it with asphalt anyway...

  2. Most of those major highways have roo fences. Some of them possum bridges too ;)

  3. Well, if we must trade driving indignities, then today I'm getting ready for winter. I put away the lawnmower, and readied the snowblower! I've put on ice-tires for the van because I regularly take it to horrible places such as Montreal and Ottawa!

  4. OK, you win. Unless I can trump you with toll roads...
