Nepal radar

Reference

Just did this in geosciences+  but I'll do it here.

Lots of tight fringes, like contour lines, is bad.  North of Kat the fringes reverse.  This is the super zone, or I like to call it the 'hammer zone'.  The whole valley is formed by the broken up hanging wall.  The maximum PGV or intensity would be in the hammer zone.  Step across to the footwall, and you find it much less.  However, precarious boulders and snowpacks are very sensitive to a few cm/s, so you lose both ways.  Firm ground motion in Kat was probably only 10-20 cm/s, but you would get soft valley amplification of 10 to 100 times.

In the hammer zone, PGV would be a few metres per second, which is enough to lift giant rocks.  In a similar earthquake in California, an entire cliff was lifted and you could only see it by some junk being sucked in.  Forget subduction zones, these things are our F5 tornadoes of earthquakes.

Further thought:  We should get a really nice image, just like this one, if our M6 thrust hits OK City.  :)  A bit smaller, but just as intense.

Oklahoma earthquakes - getting close to a storm of 4's

Ok, just 2.  But I'm waiting for 4 or 5 M4's.  That would mean something really big.  This was a shallow strike-slip under the poor old Anthony courthouse.  It can't take much more!  We've also seen a fair bit of activity along the OkCity thrust fault.  It's all primed for a 5 or 6 thrust, which will shed some bricks for sure.

Because of the deep earthquakes, we're cruising with a 1% chance per month of an M7 thrust.  This would make some parts of the city look like Nepal.  But it will never happen ....  Don't worry, be happy!

Third 4:  This just in.  Shallow thrust, intensity 5.  Ok, we can now call it a storm.  Expect one or two more, and then a fiver or six.  Dilation Theory Rules.

4th 4:  That's enough, get on with the show.

Linux - Debian turnover, a time of great confusion

Every two years, Debian throws us into a great mess.  It's good to come out the other side.  Namely, I'm talking about the shift of Jessie to stable.  I run testing on one machine, and stable on the other.  Every once in a while, I have mucked things so much that I reinstall from a usb.  Debian loves its Toy Story names, so the install always uses the cutie names.  You have the choice of using the boring generic names.

So now on my testing machine, I have to change 'jessie' to the generic 'testing', since I don't think the new name of 'Stretch' is that established yet.  There weren't too many changes.

But on my 'stable' machine, I changed the name in 'sources.list' from 'Wheezy' to 'Jessie'.  There were thousands of updates, and I had to run 'aptitude upgrade --full-resolver' to try to get it to work.

Oh neat, this update has totally bricked my machine.  Time for a re-install.  blah.  Don't try this at home, kiddies.

Update:  It totally shattered my built-in amd apu graphics, dvi output, which I worked so hard at.  Working on analog.  I can't decide whether the new installer will have this all organized by now.

Update2:  I recompiled a new kernel, adding all the radeon stuff.  dmesg looks good, but no dvi output.  There seems to be no hope to fix this now.  As usual, I'll wait for other people to have this problem.  :)  The standard vga seems better.

Nepal Earthquake - Aftershocks Shocking

This zone is 200 km long.  A true M8 would be 300 km long.  The footwall is probably to the north, and all the populated areas are on the hanging wall, where all the aftershocks are.  We are lucky the city wasn't in the true 'hammer zone' of the thrust fault.  This happened with the Armenian earthquake, which was only an M7 but the city was on the zone.

Same with Kobe -- an M7 with attitude.  Aftershocks can bring down damaged buildings, and sometimes cause more disasters (remember Christchurch?).  Some of these aftershocks are closer to the populated areas, so the PGV can be higher.

In Toronto, we have a lot of people right on the potential zone.  The chance for a big earthquake here is exactly the same as all these other places, every few hundred years in the same spot.  Oklahoma City may have a slightly greater chance.  :)

Last Toronto Glacier Fading - Victim of Global Warming

Here it is, only almost May, and the last ice is fading.  I took this sad shot today.  We know that some day we'll have kilometres of ice, and we'll all live underground.  Constantly redoing the ice shafts as the glaciers grind over us.  But not this day.

Here is a picture of an Arctic wildflower in Toronto, struggling against the coming heat.  Oh, I know you're going to ask why all the doom and gloom, saying that all the latest scientific papers are destroying Warming, noting that past variability has been underestimated.  I know all that, but I've been cold so long, that I am afraid of thawing.

Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children are swarming,
But there is no joy in Hogtown — Frigid Toronto is warming.

M7.8 Nepal earthquake - valley thrust supershear

Somewhere I have done a huge thing on blind thrust supershear earthquakes.  I even did a wikipedia on it.  The whole area is under compression because of mountain building.  Then they have these lovely valleys where everybody likes to settle.  But what are they really?  They are the scars of old thrust faults.  Each one goes every few hundred years, but there are a lot of them.  The PGV is record-breaking, if somebody could record it, probably 2 m/s or more.

Vancouver M6.1 walks down the track

This is right down at the bottom of the previous M7ish strike-slip earthquake,  This one is oblique thrust.

The big question is which track?  I am adamant about the buried strike-slip fault that defines the island, and goes way down into Seattle.  This is the real threat to Vancouver, but it is buried under a ton of sediment.  Pooh-pooh on the subduction zone, that is the worst-defined zone on the planet.  Other cities will tumble before this one does anything.

Being adjacent to the old quake, it could be a left-over or the start of the next section.  I make no predictions since my previous extrapolation was assuming the earthquakes were walking North to Alaska.

Just like Oklahoma, we could use some deep imaging here.

Oklahoma comes clean about earthquakes

Reference

That's nice.  Now I don't have anything to do.  I can't make fun of the OGS or the usgus.  They have taken the more extreme position that it is all the water they inject, not just surface water.

It's too late for the oil industry to come up with this thought:

“It worked out smashingly right up to the point where it didn’t,” Mr. Hatfield said. “Something changed and we need to figure out why that is.”

They lied and cheated, and when the big earthquakes come rolling in, everything has to stop.  Think of the effect on oil prices!  Had they been honest sooner, they could have investigated the patented Fish Treatment. They could have injection and no earthquakes, but really, they should seal their boreholes.

So for now, all the government people are going for the Stupidity Defence, where they throw up their hands and say there is nothing they can do.  The earthquakes will go on.

Download is Dead, Bring Forth the Stream

The cooperative network of bittorrent has been thoroughly smashed by the slimy lawyers of the home box office.  They have sent depressing letters everywhere, and thus depressed the new economy by 2 points, throwing thousands out work.  Their infamy is now a close second to the Sony rootkit, and we know what happened to that company.

So, go sic 'em, my Mad Russians.  Nobody will morn.  Ask not for whom the bell tolls, Mr. boxoffice.

Now, instead of mutual cooperation, we will go to single-channel streaming sites, where they serve us every sort of porn ads.  All of it not covered by 'harperism put everybody in jail'.  When they do make a new law, we know what will happen to it.

So remove 'download' from your lexicon, everything is 'stream'.  I promise harp-nose that I will never 'download' again, I'm a stream-boy now!

Taiwan earthquake

Standard subduction zone earthquake in an interesting area.  I love Taiwan earthquakes, since they record and publish the PGV.  We should see what it takes to blow up a transformer.

Twin fours, earthquakes in Oklahoma

I don't feel like writing about them, they look like average depth strike-slip.  Very mundane.  I'm expecting a storm of 4's as a prelude to a 5, and I'll write then.

Toronto monster house to fill in wetland

Now, I'm not saying where this is, it's off Westmount Park Drive, in an area of millions-dollar homes.  The way to make the big bucks is to put in a tennis court in the wetlands like all the neighbours.  In this case, they are going over a sewer easement.  Nice toad swamp.  I don't really feel for these speculators, since many of these houses look empty.

Oklahoma earthquake - extremely tiny and shallow

They are now reporting earthquakes below 2.5.  I guess they got their extra seismic analyst.  We are now going for a record for the tiniest earthquake being felt.  The rule of thumb used to be that you needed a 3 to be felt, but OK is going way beyond that.  This is an extremely shallow strike-slip (shear) earthquake, you can tell by the felt area to the NE.  Their stated depths don't mean anything.  Now, I really wish they had calibrated broadband seismometers so we could tell the PGV.  My general experience Ontario is that it takes 0.5 mm/s to be felt.  But I suspect that everybody is constantly on tenterhooks here, so that the sensitivity must be a lot lower, counteracted by the general apathy to report yet another one.  :)

Update:  Two high-three thrusts, giving an intensity 5, right on the main shear zone.  In Chaos, anything can happen.  :)

Linux - 4.0 Kernel Working Well

It's working fine for me.  I wonder if they have the alx bug fixed now.  3.9.3  activated that bug and I was waiting for the next version, but it hasn't come yet.  It's my laptop with the funny ethernet card.  I'll wait until 4.0.1  Right now I'm running 3.2 which runs great.

I am always amazed how these old bugs keep reappearing.  It shows that running on old hardware is a bitch, and it's only if a lot of people have that hardware, that it gets fixed right away.  Linux is the best for old hardware.  I just noticed that Apple has a horrible bug, but they say it's 'too hard' to fix the old versions of the operating system, and it seems the same effort (none!) to run the new OS on the older hardware.  It's no sweat off their knees, everybody should just buy new hardware every year!

M3.3 shallow thrust under Cushing Ok. - Intensity 4

Ok, here's the deal.  Those oil tanks all rupture at a PGV of 50 cm/s.  The pitiful dykes don't have a chance.  There is a sea of oil, and the crunching steel sets it ablaze.

Probably better than going into the rivers.  Right now a very tiny M3.3 caused an Intensity 4, which might be 5 cm/s.  Go up to more than a 5 with a shallow thrust and .....

Those people must also be on soft ground.  I know they like to put those oil tank on mush, so there's not too much differential strain on the very thin steel.  When all this happens, I think we'll have to stop driving for a while, maybe not our electric car.  :)

Update:  Follow by another M3.4 that was barely felt.

The Proper Tor Relay Letter

There's nobody to send this to.

Dear [ISP]:

Thank you for forwarding me the notice you received from [copyright claimant] regarding [content]. I would like to assure you that I am not hosting the claimed infringing materials, and furthermore, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's ("DMCA") safe harbors likely protect you from liability arising from this complaint. The notice is likely based upon misunderstandings about the law and about some of the software I run.

As you know, the DMCA creates four "safe harbors" for service providers to protect them from copyright liability for the acts of their users, when the ISPs fulfill certain requirements. (17 U.S.C. § 512) The DMCA's requirements vary depending on the ISP's role. You may be familiar with the "notice and takedown" provisions of section 512(c) of the DMCA; however, those do not apply when an ISP merely acts as a conduit. Instead, the "conduit" safe harbor of section 512(a) of the DMCA has different and less burdensome eligibility requirements, as the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals held in RIAA v. Verizon (see https://www.eff.org/sites/default/files/filenode/RIAA_v_Verizon/20030121-riaa-v-verizon-order.pdf) and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals confirmed in RIAA v. Charter (see https://w2.eff.org/IP/P2P/Charter/033802P.pdf).

Under DMCA 512(a), service providers like you are typically protected from damages for copyright infringement claims if you also maintain "a policy that provides for termination in appropriate circumstances of subscribers and account holders of the service provider's system or network who are repeat infringers." If you have and implement such a policy, and you otherwise qualify for the safe harbor, you should be free from fear of copyright damages.

As for what makes a reasonable policy, as the law says, it's one that terminates subscribers who are repeat infringers. The notification you received is certainly not proof of the "repeat infringement" that is required under the law before you need to terminate my account. In fact, it's not even proof of any copyright infringement; a notice claiming infringement is not the same as a determination of infringement. I have not infringed any copyrights and do not intend to do so. Therefore, you should continue to be protected under the DMCA 512(a) safe harbor without taking any further action.

You may be curious about what prompted the faulty notice. It was likely triggered by a program I run called Tor. Tor is network software that helps users to enhance their privacy, security, and safety online. It does not host any content. Rather, it is part of a network of nodes on the Internet that simply pass packets among themselves before sending them to their destinations, just as any Internet intermediary does. The difference is that Tor tunnels the connections such that no hop can learn both the source and destination of the packets, giving users protection from nefarious snooping on network traffic. The result is that, unlike most other Internet traffic, the final IP address that the recipient receives is not the IP address of the sender. Tor protects users against hazards such as harassment, spam, and identity theft. Initial development of Tor, including deployment of a public-use Tor network, was a project of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, with funding from ONR and DARPA. (For more on Tor, see https://www.torproject.org/.) I hope, as an organization committed to protecting the privacy of its customers, you'll agree that this is a valuable technology.

Thank you for working with me on this matter. As a loyal subscriber, I appreciate your notifying me of this issue and hope that the protections of DMCA 512 put any concerns you may have to rest. If not, please contact me with any further questions.

Very truly yours,
Your customer, [User]

Very very sad.  I read a lot and you should not have an exit from your home connection.  Until I get a clearance from The Geister himself, I have turned off any exit.

Linux - Do Not Torrent Through Tor

Yeah, I've figured out how I got a Hollywood letter.  First of all, I don't believe they put a speck of effort into this for accuracy.  That would be really expensive.

But I run a Tor relay on Linux, and I have been brave enough to allow it to be an exit relay.  That means the Saudis can come after me for allowing ladies to look up driving lessons.  The Tor Network scrambles things so that nobody can find the originating IP address, but people can shoot the messenger, that is the final IP address.

Bell puts no effort into this, and I'm certainly not contacting the sharks directly.  I'll just wait to collect a big pile of these letters.

But, please, do not clog up the Tor network with this stuff, it's too slow.  There are better ways.  Can't wait to get a letter from Russia that I'm illegally accessing PoutineSucks.com

Update - Open Letter

Dear Hollywood, Like many Canadians I run a Tor Network Relay.  I can no more control the output than you can control your coke habit.  We do it to protect gays from your right wing.  Our Federal Government is also right-wing, and they love you guys, but who knows how long they will stay in power?

In fact, I am encouraging all Canadians to run Tor Relays.  You can send them all letters, and we'll make a chain of them to surround Ottawa.

The old Trudeau would have said "Up Yours', but the new one never says anything because he has a lisp.  He should be encouraging us.

Yours in all sincerity,

Update:  Since Justin won't support me, I have turned off exiting on my Tor relay.

Torrent letter from Bell

I deny it all, I hate that show (rotten kids).

Now subtitled:  Hollywood sends random letters.

The Government of Canada requires by law that all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) let their clients know when content owners contact them about possible unauthorized use of the content owner's material such as illegal downloading of music, videos and games. Funny stuff:  Checking my own logs, I find that this is completely wrong.  All the kids have seen those episodes already :).  These guys and Bell must be sending them randomly to Canada.  You can't throw a stone without hitting a downloader.  :)

Update:  Letters without a speck of fact checking are spam.  Change your openwrt router to use the Google DNS servers rather than having Bell spy on you for ads.  Google knows everything anyway.  :)

Whoops:  I'm running a Tor exit relay.  People aren't supposed to torrent through Tor, but I guess they do.  Maybe I'll get a lot of these letters.  :)

Whoops2:  I have turned off exiting on my Tor relay.

Update2:  Second letter on the famous 'got' entrapment leak.  Looks like streaming now.

Update3:  Apparently, Harper forgot to include even the tiniest incentive to reduce spam to the isp's.  Now the nasties can send millions of these letters without the slightest cost to them.  But it is working, bittorrent is for the more sophisticated user, and after a few letters, Rogers reports that nobody gets them any more.  Amazing.

M4.3 Oklahoma earthquake

This looks like a mid-depth thrust.  It won't stay at 4.3 very long, if that recent 5 called 4.2 is any indication.  We'll have to wait for an hour before I can look at the Polaris results.

(this will be continued for a while)

So, it's coming in fairly heavy for the southern Polaris sites, but I haven't got the cleaner northern ones.

The felt zone is now reporting Intensity 5.

It will be very difficult to knock this one down.

The northern sites have it looking closer to the 5 than a known 4.  It must have been deeper than I thought.

Update:  Huge felt variation in the city.  Listen people, if you felt this as an Intensity 4, get earthquake insurance!  Far stations were picking it up as a 4.8, which agrees with Polaris, and it means that it is deep.

Russian Hackers Attack the Fish

I'm getting huge spikes of traffic from Russia.  I'm glad they are good at something.  :)

I can't see they are that interested in earthquakes, since they are now reduced to drinking local moonshine, and eating beets.

Apologies:  They aren't really fish-killing, but these huge spikes are ridiculous!

Oklahoma earthquake storm of low 3's

This is fine.  We're back to the old days.  A storm of low 3's only gives us a 4 eventually.  I would define a storm as about a dozen a day.  We know now that a storm of high 3's or low 4's gives us a 5, but not today.  :)

Everybody enjoy a fine day down there.  I've got freezing rain as our mini ice age continues.

Oklahoma has a real M4.2 earthquake

Look at the feeble felt area.

And much thinner on the Polaris seismometers, but the same peak amplitude.  Rough guess about 10 times less energy than their so-called M4.2 on the weekend.

It was still a normal earthquake, so a very low PGV.  I'm amazed that a 4.2 is up already, If we had a storm with these babies, LOOK OUT MOMMA!

Update:  Already discounted to M3.9

Fast and Furious OPP takedown

Here's what I wrote on utube.

I hate when those movies comes out.  Then all the hot-shots come out.  I was actually speeding (10 klicks over), when this guy zooms by me at 120 in an 80 zone.  You could have heard us shout "There's a second one!".  But it was the greatest OPP take down ever in a super souped up invisible car.  Yeah, you could have heard us.  He had a black licence plate, hope the cop gets him for it.

For the second clip, I was turning right and this guy almost got me.  His windows are so tinted that he couldn't see me.  :)  Super dark tinting is endemic in Toronto.

It's been like 2 years since I got something on the dashcam.  Canada is so boring!

Update:  Stupid dashcam turned off the audio.

Oklahoma Earthquake Easter Egg

Article

Find the Easter Egg right under your feet.  It's an M5 earthquake disguised as an M4.2.  The rest of the world calls it a 5, but some junior usgus seismologist, being forced to work the weekend, shrunk the kids.

The press is in on this like flies on stink.  Makes no difference to me, but this large earthquake was very deep, and had a mechanism that puts out very little PGV for magnitude.  The next one might win the prize.

Update:  It only suppressed things for half a day.  The events are starting up again.

Oklahoma earthquake dilation - It's BACK!

Yeah, as long as there are no earthquakes in the OK zones for 2 days, then my dilation theory is back on the table.  As you recall, there was a pattern of 'quenching', where things built up for a few days, and then a larger earthquake would occur and quench all activity for a while.  I used this to demolish the unstated hypothesis of the usgus, in my huge physics article.

Then the intense activity started again, and completely stopped, until just recently.  My theory was diving in flames!  But this earthquake has allowed it to pull out of the dive with all engines restarted.   Because my local guy said it was the biggest ever, I am dismissing the usgus M4.2 and going with the European M4.9.  That means the dilation run-up was much longer, and included that dead spell.  This is exactly how it was described 30 years ago.

A hard-rock fault is very bumpy.  It doesn't really like large earthquakes, but if you inject enough, you can persuade it.

Before the injectors, the fault was very happy, each hill and valley matched.  But things started to push, and the fault must move.  Just like a landslide, there is a heck of a lot of action before the final rupture.  The entire fault must get ready.  For an M5-ish like we just had, we're talking about 300 m of fault.  With slow movement, the fault has to dilate, just like two saw-cut pieced of wood.  The gaps must flood with water which takes some time.  Then it might hover for a while, stopping all distant activity.  If we want a really good super-shear rupture, the whole fault must be at a small critical displacement.

Then the fault ruptures super-shear, which very fast.  It just skips the hills and valleys, and the dynamic friction goes to near zero.  Yahoo!  Just like racing down the hill in an out-of-control toboggan.  That was great fun when I was a kid, and you bent down, and took out the legs of the kids crazy enough to walk up the main slope.  Nothing could stop you!

Case for a deep M5:  It felt worse, but there was no damage.  A deep normal earthquake gives a big deep whoomp, like a badly tuned elevator dropping.  That means an accelerometer would read high displacement, but little PGV.  They don't have those, just el-cheapo seismometers that probably had conniptions and can't read the low frequencies.  This guy will eventually be paired with shallow or deep thrust which really puts out high PGV, and peels bricks.  One reason the big lawsuit will lose in the higher courts is that there isn't any recognizable building code in OK, and the defence will be that of excessive flimsiness.

Update:  Since my fav. muck-raking Tulsa newspaper is silent on all this, I guess they got to them, too.  :(

Update2:  I told the newspaper that I've washed my hands of them for Easter.  They said I'm so unfair!

Update3:  OMG I'm so old!  I can't find the original MIT papers on Google.

Update4:  The Europe guys have revised down to the usgus magnitude.  They have to, since the usgus and their weeny seismometers have official authority.  The real seismometers beg to differ.  :)

Polaris in Southern Ontario recorded it with real seismometers (broadband).  This was not a 4.2

I don't they ever recorded a real 4 from OK.

Here is a true M3.7 from earlier in the day.

It does not exist here.

Update - whatever:  Although I washed my hands of them, Tulsa World has risen with new earthquake muck.  The New York Times can't wait to steal this.  :)

Oklahoma earthquake - M4.2

I think this one is underrated, since it is a deep normal earthquake.

And the beachball is tension, which is usually a prelude to a larger thrust.

This just came after a big New York Times article showing the corruption.  The comments are great.

My local correspondent reports that this was biggest one yet for him.  Sure hope his bricks are tied in.  :)  Normal earthquakes are weenies, so he must have been right in the zone.

Update:  Just what I thought, this was underrated, since most normal earthquakes hardly give out any PGV.  Distant monitoring puts this as an M4.9.  If my dilation theory is correct, then there should be no earthquakes for a while.

Our Mini Ice Age Continues

In the two years that I have looked at the this, I have never seen the Trade Winds so low.  That really would have put a damper on the old sailing ships.  The most marvellous thing is that we could actually have a mini ice age, of the type that froze out the Vikings, and still the warmies would report global temperatures rising.  That's because an ice age is a totally Northern Hemisphere thing.  Everybody else is warm, perhaps even warmer.  Who knows?

For the sake of my cottage, I hope that the belt starts going north again.  We Canadians really appreciate the warmth.

Irving, Texas, M3.3 earthquake

Well, I thought they had found the culprit who was injecting gas frack waste, and I guess they didn't.  This is right back to the size that knocked the baseball player on his keester.

In all cases where they totally stopped injection, the earthquakes have stopped dead.  I guess the stuff is still getting in.  Perhaps they should be like those other states and pass the famous legislation:  "Right to drive everybody out of the state with half a brain".  Then nobody would complain!  :)

Update:  2 more.

Update2:  Eastern gas fracking rigs are increasing.

M4.0 Missouri Earthquake - Oh, New Madrid, where is thy sting?

Finally, something interesting.  Although Oklahoma is the New-New Madrid, this is the grand old lady herself, still active.  Both places have identical mechanisms, that of a giant water drain, but NM has shot its load.  But water is still flowing in, and it can extend.

This earthquake is right at the end of the southern shear wing.  You can see it is a deep strike-slip along the fault line.  But that's probably it for another year or two.  NM is a natural seep, and a thousand times slower than OK.

Update:  Discounted down to M3.6 which is quite a huge firesale discount.  That probably means it was over 20 km deep.
