Seismic Guy Vents on Haiti Earthquake, etc.

Article

The United Nations must act to stop construction of buildings that are like "weapons of mass destruction," says a leading earthquake expert.

I've never heard of this guy, but what the heck, he can have his moment of fame. To think, old seismic guys venting! What will they come up with next?

30 minutes to know that Haiti got flattened? I knew as soon as the ticker came up, maybe 29 minutes! :)

I wonder how a standard wood framed house like we build here in Toronto would have fared in this earthquake. My guess is, a lot better than the heavy concrete structures in Haiti.

Why don't they just start building with wood? Is it too expensive there?

Not a speck of wood there! The place is so overpopulated, so corrupt, so teetering on the edge of anarchy, that no forests could survive.

It really leads to the question of how they are going to rebuild. Already the shanty towns are up!

So to my first question. How would our wood frame house hold up to a 7.0 with the limited seismic design we have here (few bolts in the foundation, etc).

It's never appreciated here what the soil can do. But in the end, our modern houses will not kill us. I wonder about those stupid tile roofs!

Old brick houses on filled swamps have some potential for death.
